To the right is the miniature LR40 from the "From Bree to Rivendell" series. It depicts Arwen carrying the royal banner of Gondor which she has been embroidered on while Aragorn out fighting. (Do your part for the war effort, girls!) Aragorn received it from the hand of Halbarad, a captian of the Grey Company which came out of the North to meet up with their kinsman after the battle of Hornburg:
"And
Aragorn said to Halbarad: ‘What is that that you bear, kinsman?’ For he
saw that instead of a spear he bore a tall staff, as it were a standard, but
it was close-furled in a black cloth bound about with many thongs.
‘It is a gift that I bring you from the Lady of Rivendell,’ answered Halbarad. ‘She wrought it in secret, and long was the making. But she also sends word to you: The days now are short. Either our hope cometh, or all hopes end. Therefore I send thee what I have made for thee. Fare well, Elfstone!’ (tLotR, Book Five, Chapter Two: 'The The Passing of the Grey Company')
For this one I figured Arwen would look rather fetching in two shades of grey-purple; lavender for the bodice and dove grey for the dress. As with all light colors it pays to use many layers. Rather than using washes I applied the darkest one first and then successively lighter colors in thin layers. I avoided thinning with pure white since it tends to give the miniature a chalky look.
